Free Tick Testing available to Barnstable County Residents

Ticks are active all year long, but with rising temperatures you may be spending more time outside, increasing your risk to be bitten by ticks. The best way to protect yourself is by taking proper precautions if you spend time in Tick habitat.

Tick Prevention Methods

·         Use Permetherin-treated clothing or repellants containing 20%–30% DEET.

·         Tuck long pants into socks or wear closed-toe shoes and tuck shirt into pants.

·         Check skin and clothes for ticks every day.

·         Put clothes in dryer on HIGH for 15 minutes to kill ticks on clothing.

Thanks to funding from the Barnstable County Department of Health and Environment and the American Rescue Plan Act, tick testing costs are reduced. *

Choose from three levels of testing:

·         Basic Test (normally $60)

o    Free for Barnstable County residents

·         Standard Test (normally $100)

o    $15 for Barnstable County residents

o    Free for Wellfleet residents

·         Comprehensive Test (normally $200)

o    $115 with Barnstable County Discount

o    $100 for Wellfleet residents

What’s Tested:

Each test screens for various tick-borne diseases, including Lyme Disease, Babesiosis, Anaplasmosis, Powassan Virus, and others. The diseases tested for depend on the level of testing you choose.
